Using Shelly devices locally vs. with Shelly cloud

Updated over 4 months ago

Most Wi-Fi-based Shelly devices, with a few exceptions, are capable of operating in both cloud and non-cloud (local) modes.

Some older, now discontinued first-generation devices, such as the original round-shaped Shelly H&T sensor, only operate in cloud mode, as they are designed to store measured sensor data directly in the cloud by default. For example, in the case of the Shelly H&T, Shelly Cloud cannot be disabled due to this dependency.

When pairing Wi-Fi Shelly devices using the Shelly Smart Control app, they will automatically connect to the official Shelly Cloud by default.

If cloud access is not required, it can be disabled in the device’s network settings, either through the local web interface or directly in the app.

From that point on, the device can only be controlled via the local network.
