In 2025, Shelly introduced several fourth-generation (Shelly Gen4) devices that support multiprotocol communication, meaning they can operate not only via Wi-Fi but also through Zigbee.
Earlier Shelly device generations, such as Gen1, Gen2 (Shelly Plus), and Gen3, support only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and do not have Zigbee support.
Also, Shelly Wave series devices are designed exclusively for the Z-Wave protocol and also do not support Zigbee.
Selecting Zigbee Mode on Gen4 Devices
When installing a Gen4 device that supports Zigbee, you can select the desired operating mode — Wi-Fi or Zigbee — using the physical button on the device.
Note: Only one protocol can be active at a time.
What Happens in Zigbee Mode
If you choose Zigbee 3.0 mode:
The device will not appear in the Shelly Smart Control app,
and it will not connect to Shelly's cloud services.
Instead, it will connect to the Zigbee hub or gateway you pair it with, whether that’s part of a local or cloud-based smart home platform.
How to Pair with a Zigbee Hub
To pair a Shelly Gen4 device in Zigbee mode, refer to the pairing instructions for the specific Zigbee hub or gateway you plan to use — such as Home Assistant (ZHA/Zigbee2MQTT), SmartThings, Amazon Echo with Zigbee hub, or others.
Each Zigbee controller has its own process for pairing new devices, so follow the steps outlined in the user guide of the hub you're using.
This approach gives Shelly Gen4 users flexibility to operate in ecosystems beyond Shelly’s own, especially for those building multi-brand Zigbee-based smart homes.
