Magic Switch Mode in the Sonoff BASICR4

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Introduction

One of the most common issues with smart switches and connected lights is that when a wall switch is turned off, the entire circuit loses power. This causes the smart device to go offline, breaking automations and disabling remote control. The Magic Switch Mode available in the Sonoff BASICR4 and Sonoff BASIC Gen5 addresses this issue by keeping the relay powered, even if the wall switch is in the “off” position.

About the Magic Switch Mode

Magic Switch Mode decouples the wall switch from its direct power-cutting function. When the mode is enabled, the wall switch no longer disconnects the load. Instead, it transmits a signal to the relay, while the relay continues to receive power. In this configuration, the wall switch functions as an input control, not as a circuit interrupter.

Problems Addressed

  1. Loss of connectivity in smart devices
In standard wiring, turning the wall switch off disconnects the device from power, placing it offline and preventing control through mobile apps or automation. Magic Switch Mode maintains power to the relay, keeping the device accessible even when the wall switch is in the off position.

  2. Compatibility with user habits
Household members such as children, elderly users, or guests may still prefer using traditional switches. With this mode enabled:

    • The wall switch can continue to be operated in the usual way.

    • Remote and automated control remain functional at the same time.

  3. Support for two-way or multi-gang configurations
The mode allows multi-switch installations to act as triggers for automation events, while preventing the disconnection of the smart device from the power supply.

Enabling and Using Magic Switch Mode

Wiring Configuration

  • Connect terminals L1 and L2 on the rocker switch.

  • This setup allows the switch to be operated without disconnecting power to the device.

Enabling Magic Switch Mode in eWeLink

  1. Open the BASICR4 device page in the eWeLink application.

  2. Navigate to Device Settings and enable Magic Switch Mode.

  3. When this mode is enabled, the standard Power-on State function is automatically disabled to ensure reliable operation.

Behavior of the Power-on State

  • After enabling Magic Switch Mode, the Power-on State parameter is set to OFF by default.

  • Any manual adjustment of this parameter will disable Magic Switch Mode. For stable operation, do not modify it once the mode is active.

Verifying Operation

  1. Set the rocker switch to the off position.

    • The connected light will turn off.

    • The BASICR4 remains powered and online.

  2. Use the eWeLink application to turn the light back on.

    • If the module remains online throughout, Magic Switch Mode has been configured successfully.

Real-Life Use Cases

  • Maintain Smart Control at All Times

Homes with guests, children, or elderly residents often rely on traditional wall switches. Even if someone flips the switch off, your smart module stays online—allowing you to control lights remotely via app, voice, or automation at any time.

  • Preserve Traditional Habits

No need to retrain family members—flip the switch as usual, and your app control stays intact. Magic Switch Mode helps you keep daily habits while gaining smart control, bridging old routines with new technology.

  • Ideal for Dual-Control Lighting

In dual-switch setups where two switches control the same light, Magic Switch Mode eliminates interference. Both switches still work physically, while the Sonoff BASICR4 remains online for automation and remote use.

Compatibility Notes

To properly use Magic Switch Mode, you must confirm:

  • Your wall switch is a double-pole rocker switch (not touch-sensitive or electronic).

  • Bulb Compatibility: Supports common LED, CFL, and incandescent bulbs (3–100 W).
